Founded in 1991, The San Jose Sharks were the first NHL franchise based in the San Francisco Bay Area since the California Golden Seals relocated to Cleveland in 1976. From 1991 until 1993, the San Jose Sharks played at Cow Palace arena in Daly City. During its first few seasons, the team was made up mostly of minor league players and rookies. The Sharks had a terrible record those first few years, yet Sharks fans rallied behind their team.

During the 1992–93 season, the Sharks sold the most merchandise of any NHL team, bringing in $150 million. Due to the team’s commercial success, the team was able to relocate to the newly upgraded SAP Center, which is closer to the bulk of their fans.
